Mata Hari

Mata Hari had spread a romantic story regarding herself. She said that she had been born in Malabar in South India, her mother was a dancer and that she had died during her birth. Mata Hari had also published that her name in childhood was Mata Hari and that she had been brought up in a Siva Temple. If we consider these words, her name appears to be quite significant as Mata Hari in India Language means a “Killer of one’s mother”.

The popularity of Mata Hari, the black-haired beauty, began to touch the heights of fame. Just before the outbreak of the War, Mata Hari received espionage training in a school in Lorchi. In 1912 when the First World War broke out, Mata Hari was seen driving on the streets of Germany in the company of Berlin’s Police Chief. But at that time she was the citizen of a neutral country and her estate was in France. Mata Hari returned to Franc in 1913 in spite of the War. She gave up dancing and established herself as a fashionable personality.

Even before she had returned to France, the espionage department of France had been able to collect all information regarding Mata Hari’s activities. The department was aware that Mata Hari had close connections with the German Police Chief, its Prince and other high ranking officials, but there was no substantial proof. On the contrary, she was so popular with the important people of Paris that it was dangerous to touch her. For years Mata Hari continued to foil all attempts of the French espionage. At last she was arrested in a hotel in Paris on the 13th February, 1917. She had just returned from Madrid, where she had secretly met many senior German spies.

To prove the charges against Mata Hari, she was given a copy of the telegram which had been sent from the German Army Headquarters to the Madrid Embassy wherein it was mentioned that H-21 should be given 15,000 Marks after her return to Paris. The French had also obtained the information that Mata Hari had received 30,000 Marks from the German espionage department in 1915 before going to France.

Mata Hari had connections with many French, British and Russian high ranking officials. She used to obtain military information from them and send them to the German Intelligence Department. She had a very novel method of sending information. She was charged with having caused the death of 50,000 soldiers. On these charges she was shot dead on 15th February, 1917 and with that the “Morning Star” vanished forever.
