In 1929 Wilhelm Canaris met Goering, the right hand of Adolf Hitler. Goering brought him in Adolf Hitler’s contact. This helped Wilhelm Canaris to change into the Nazi way to thinking. He now fully devoted himself to the progress of the Nazi party and also of Adolf Hitler. He knew that the Nazi party would not be able to come to power so easily. His especially clever and tricky mind set to work on organized plans of overthrowing the existing ruling party. The first step was to make use of the espionage department of the Weimer Republic for the Nazis. This was a terrible action on his part. He sold several strategic war secrets to Italy and collected money for party work. Using all his espionage skills he prepared reports of all the high ranking officials of the Weimer Republic. He stole the secret documents of the Chancellor and it was on this basis that Hitler threatened to organize an uprising of industrialists and landlords against the proposal of land reforms. All this resulted in so much of confusion in Weimer that President Hindenberg decided to dismiss the Chancellor and Adolf Hitler was given that post.

In spite of doing all this, Wilhelm Canaris never came to the forefront. He preferred to remain in the background. He neither took part in meetings nor was his name or photograph ever published in any newspaper. He always remained a figure shrouded in mystery. No room of the Secret Service Department had his nameplate. He never used the common exits or entrances. He entered the officers through a secret door. People working in the same office did not know where his seat was. For them he was an ordinary man who lived in a far off south corner of Berlin.

The second wonderful achievement of Wilhelm Canaris was the establishment of Franco’s dictatorship in Spain. He got sent the latest German weapons to the Fascists and the old useless ones to the Republicans. He persuaded Adolf Hitler to send 500million marks as a help to France.

He came to know of the plans of England and U.S.A. and was successful in foiling them. He reached London on a false passport. After residing in London for two months, he went to the Netherlands. There he met a German spy called Kelly. The British Secret Service suspected Kelly from the very beginning. The activities of Wilhelm Canaris were also watched. The Scotland Yard forced Kelly to act as a double agent. Then Kelly started to send useless information to Germany and the important ones to Britain. Wilhelm Canaris did nothing to stop this duplicity as he had all the relevant information regarding the U.S.A. joining the War. He very well knew its outcome that it would result in the defeat of Adolf Hitler and Germany. Wilhelm Canaris now became a double agent because he did not want that along with Adolf Hitler, Germany too should be destroyed. This was his only aim. Disregarding his high post, he started sending secret information to the Allied Nations. It was he who was able to avert the plane accident, planned by Hitler, which would have resulted in the death of the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. The accident did take place, but the man who sat in it smoking a cigar and posing as Winston Churchill was not the British Prime Minister. It was Wilhelm Canaris who was responsible for the internal strife in the ranks of the German Army and also for activating peace movement.

Wilhelm Canaris met the Pope in Rome. Thereafter, he informed Britain that some German Generals were in favor of signing a treaty with Russia. According things were planned out in the Allied meetings held at Malta and Teheran. Meanwhile a man called Stauphenberg conspired to put an end to Adolf Hitler’s life with a bomb.

Two days after this event the German police arrested Wilhelm Canaris. Wilhelm Canaris was replaced by General Chellenberg, who found many documents in the drawers of his table, which were highly incriminating and which made him face a sentence of death. Among the documents the very important ones were correspondence with the Pope’s Secretary with regard to signing a peace treaty, a diary filled with stories of Nazi torture and repression, and a medical report on the mental health of Adolf Hitler.

Wilhelm Canaris was put to death, but he died with no regrets as he was firmly convinced that whatever he had done, he had done for the good of Germany and the Germans.
