The Creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming

Ian Fleming is known all over the world as the creator of “James Bond”. In real life he was a spy and a clever person too. He is the person, who succeeded in making a fool of the Nazi leader, Rudolf Hess. During the Second World War Ian Fleming displayed the cunningness of a fox and the strategy of a spider spinning a web. His acts were such that they seemed to exceed those of James Bond, the child of his imagination. One of his rare achievements was to bring Adlof Hitler’s right hand and his deputy, Rudolf Hess to defect to Scotland. He achieved this remarkable feat by taking advantage of Rudolf Hess’s blind faith in superstition.

The very mention of the world “spy” brings to mind the name of “007” British Secret Agent, James Bond. The creator of this imaginary character was Ian Fleming, who himself was a highly successful British Secret Agent before and during the Second World War. It was after his retirement that he created the hero of his novels, James Bond and began his career as a detective fiction writer. Ian Fleming’s own experiences as an international spy and his own activities become the basic of the character that he created. During his active years in the British Secret Service he did something of an outstanding nature which ended only in the year 1987.
In the West German sector of Berlin, one day a guard of Spandau prison’s lonely imprisonment cell, found the body of an old prisoner hanging from the window. The next day all the newspapers of the world carried the head line that Rudolf Hess, the onetime Deputy Fuhrer of Germany and Adlof Hitler’s principal assistant, had committed suicide. Even before the declaration of Second World War, Ian Fleming had played a master stroke. He had hatched a strategy in such a manner that Rudolf Hess was completely misled and walked into the camp of the enemy just to be arrested.

Those were the days when rumor was rife in London of a forthcoming German attack. At a time like this in May 1941, the sudden landing of a German Messerschmitt 110 Airplane in Scotland stunned the whole world. The plane had one single passenger and he was the Deputy Fuhrer, Rudolf Hess. People were even more surprised to hear that Rudolf Hess has defected to England on the basis of the predictions made according to his stars. Rudolf Hess had been told by his trusted astrologers that if German attacked Britain, it would certainly result in the destruction of both Adlof Hitler and Nazi Germany. All this was done at the instigation of Ian Fleming, whose agents in the guise of astrologers had filled the mind of Rudolf Hess with the prediction that his stars as well as those of his leaders were very unfavorable. A complete description of this strange event is recorded in “A History of British Secret Service”, a book by Richard Deacon.

Those days Ian Fleming was working for the Secret Service of British Navy. He believed that if a Nazi leader of some stature could be made to defect to Britain, the chances of Germany attacking Great Britain would become isolated. He made a careful study of the files belonging to the people close to Adlof Hitler. Rudolf Hess seemed to be a good choice. He found that Rudolf Hess was the only Nazi who wanted that there should be peace between England and Germany, so that the German Army could concentrate fully on crushing Russia. The other important thing that Ian Fleming found related to him in the personality of Rudolf Hess was that he had a blind faith in astrology.
