The Ghost
First of all we will mention the ghost of Reverend Dr. Harris, who used to visit Athenaeum Library after his death. Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist and short story writer, (1804-1864), he has given a very clear account of the ghost of Dr Harris. The ghost of Dr Harris was regularly seen by the American Novelist, Nathaniel Hawthorne.
When Nathaniel Hawthorne visited the library for study and research, he found Dr Harris was sitting in a chair, where he used to sit during his life time and he was read the Boston Post, the newspaper which was very deer to Dr Harris during his visit to the library. Nathaniel Hawthorne didn’t know in the beginning that Dr Harris was not alive and treated the ghost of Dr Harris as the actual person. When one of his friends told him that Dr Harris ha passed away. Nathaniel Hawthorne was very much surprised and he curiosity increased day by day and he saw that no one who recognized Dr Harris ever talked to him.
There is another very interesting example of the ghost of a man in grey. The ghost was seen throughout the time of Queen Anne and the Victorian era and also during the twentieth century between 1930 and 1960. The historian and theatre critic, W. J. McQueen Pope, saw the ghost several times and he made efforts to find out the identity of the person whose ghost was visible in “Grey”. All that could be concluded was that it was the ghost of some actor who was dressed in “grey” for a particular scene. The ghost was visible for over 200 years in the hall of Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, London. The very close relationship of the actor with the theatre can very well be concluded reasonably.
When we perceive an object without there being an outside motivation, it is called “Hallucination”. It represents more or less an abnormal mental condition of the subject which is supplement with the intensity of feelings and emotions. There may be just one dominating emotion such as “fear”, “anger”, or “love” or more than one emotion may be combined with each other, at a time, and give rise to a hallucination. A nervous person often wakes up when he or she hears the sound of burglars moving from room to room along the corridor. In William Shakespeare’s drama, “The Macbeth”, Macbeth visualizes the blood stained dagger so very clearly that it takes the form of a hallucination and strikes him with terror.
We close our treatment of ghosts with the following quotation, “The perennial question as to whether ghosts exist must, in view of various surveys carried out by such bodies as the British Society for Psychical Research (SPR) over the last 100 years or so, be answered in the affirmative. To reject the testimony of the many hundreds of respectable people who claim to have experienced apparitions as wishful thinking, self-delusion or downright lying would be sheer willfulness.”
The Ghost |
The ghosts are visible in the form of spirits devoid of
human characteristics. Their sights are airy and can’t be touched by our hands.
The ghosts of the parson are unearthly. It can’t be seen and also heard if the
arrival of the ghost is accompanied by certain sounds or meaningful remarks.
The illusion or phenomena of ghosts have interested man
since ages past. But now we have begun to find out scientific reasons for there
existence. Some of the parapsychologists are busy in analyzing them by using few
scientific techniques.

Very often it so happens that if and when we are very much attached to a particular person, place or thing, during our life time, our spirit or soul visits that person or place or remains close to the object even after the death of our body. It is a self-established principle that our soul never dies. Only the body dies, when the life gone out of it. It is true that no one knows where the soul goes or how does it live. But the immortality of the soul is a fundamental principle of all morality and religions. The ghost or phantom is just a version of the immortal soul coming close to the person, place or thing which was very closely associated with it during the period of its being embodies its.

On the reverse when we observe an phantom or a ghost, there is something objective that we see it can be seen by others also and may be repeated a number of times without our wanting to see it. The hallucination is purely subjective and cannot be observed by other persons sitting close to the subject. Hence we should not confuse a ghost with a hallucination and try to understand both the illusion separately and distinct from the other.
