The Spies under the Pope
The Vatican city |
In the eyes of the world, the Pope is the religious head of the Roman Catholic community. He is not supposed to favor in conspiracies and wet in worldly affairs. The exposures that came to light in 1940, disclosed that the Holy city of Vatican has its espionage set up which is quite active in the field. All this is supposed to be done in the name of religion.
The second Thursday of the month of April, 1940, was eventful for the people of Moscow. By the same token, it was a very ill-fated day for the Pope. The Pope is the spiritual and religious head of the Roman Catholic in the world. It was the day, when the espionage activities being engineered with the connivance of the Pope in the Holy city of Vatican was exposed and laid bare for the entire world to see.
That day, the police and internal security officers of the former Soviet Union presented a 48 years old, fair formed and healthy priest Bladimir Pulaki, in a special court in Moscow. It was to be an open hearing. The prosecution claimed, “This priest has been living in Moscow on a fake passport. He claims that he is a farmer from Uzbekistan. We know that he is lying. He is produced in the court for legal action.”
Before the proceeding could proceed any further, the accused sought the permission of the court for a statement. He said that actually he was Walter Caesar. He was a priest in a cathedral in Pennsylvania in the USA. He had been sent to the Soviet Union for espionage under the directions of the Pope.
The court sentenced Walter Caesar to long term imprisonment. Twenty three years after this sentence, he was exchanged for Russian Agent arrested in the USA. On his return, he was promoted as a departmental officer in the Foreign ministry in the holy city of Vatican. The Soviet Union derived full advantage from this incident and widely publicized the disclosures of Walter Caesar of course.
Queen Elizabeth I |
Walter Caesar disclosed that an organization called “Chikyoyar Rechickkam” existed in Vatican. This agency trained priests for espionage and worked under the direct supervision of the Pope. This work had been going on for the last three hundred years. This organization organized training camps for priests who had been selected from all over the world. The trainees were not allowed to talk to each other. The offices of this agency were some three kilometers away from the holy city of Vatican. From outside the building looked like on old fort. There were no apparent security measures there but it was censured by modern electronic devices.
The spying activities under the Pope started in the 15th century itself. At that time, the Pope exercised great influence even in matters of state. A conspiracy was hatched by his agents to depose Queen Elizabeth I of England during the 16th century. They wanted to place Queen Elizabeth’s sister Marry on the thorn. At that time, the chief of Royal intelligence, Sir Franchis Walsingham, override all attempts of Father Anthony Babington. He took the help of a criminal Gilbert Gifford in breaking the code used by Pope’s men. Sir Franchis Walsingham was able to decode all the secret messages and letters sent to Princess Mary. These messages were transmitted hidden in beer casks. Queen Elizabeth was told of the conspiracy. Then Princess Mary was first given a prison term but was later beheaded on February 8, 1587 in the Fotheringhay castle.
Sir Francis Walsingham |
The priests were taught to take advantage of the prayer meetings. They were initiated into ways of applying psychological pressure on the audience during sermons. Even confessions booths were to be used for gathering information. These booths are part of the church. People sit in them to confess the wrongs or sins they had committed, while a priest sits behind a wooden screen to listen to their confessions. The confessor and the priest do not see each other. It is supposed that one is absolved of sins if he confesses them and is sorry.
There had been many cases of priests being apprehended for espionage in the Soviet Union. During fifties, a priest John Callis was arrested in Ukraine and another was F. Yohanna caught in Siberia. They did not reveal anything during interrogation, but were given death sentences as blaming documents were seized from them.
That the papal spies were active in the Soviet Union can be confirmed by the following story. In 1980s, the Soviet Union experienced shortage of food grains. Russia decided to buy grains from the USA. The spies of the Pope informed the USA immediately. The USA jacked up the prices of food grains and the Soviet Union was forced to buy them on price and conditions laid down by the USA.
